Wedding wellness: self-care tips for a stress-free wedding day

Your wedding should be one of the most beautiful and memorable days of your life. It’s the day you’re celebrating the union between you and your partner and honoring the commitment to spending the rest of your lives together, so you should be enjoying every minute of it.

Unfortunately, all the prepping, planning, and general mayhem that ensues in the lead-up to the wedding can take a toll on your mental health and turn what should be a joyful moment into a stressful and overwhelming experience. Wrapped up in the whirlwind of decisions, lists, and budgets, you can lose sight of what truly matters and forget that you should prioritize yourself and have fun, not stress about every minute detail, and try to please everyone else.

While organizing a wedding is definitely not easy, and it’s understandable you might have a hard time relaxing and approaching everything with a cheerful and positive attitude when you have tons of things to do, there are ways to put wellness first so you can stay calm and relaxed on your wedding day and enjoy every step of the way.

Delegate responsibilities

Your wedding should be a reflection of you and your significant other, so you’ll have to make all the important decisions. However, the planning phase doesn’t have to be a solo act. Even if you are planning the event yourself and don’t have a whole team of professionals at your beck and call to help you run the show, you can always rely on your loved ones to lend a helping hand.

Your best friends will surely be more than happy to help you find your dream wedding dress or assist with other tasks like handling flower arrangements, decorating the venue, or preparing wedding favors. Your bridesmaids can also give you ideas and feedback on the type of bridesmaid dresses they plan to wear, while also helping you to source for it. This can take some of the burden off your shoulders and free up your schedule so you can find time to relax. Working with reliable and efficient wedding suppliers who understand your needs is also key to ensuring a positive wedding planning experience.

Take a break from social media

We generally use social media as a convenient escape from the realities of life and often turn to these platforms to help us unwind and destress. However, the mindless scrolling through social media feeds that you might think is relaxing can actually have the exact opposite effect and stress you even more.

That’s why you might want to consider unplugging from social networks or at least spending less time on them. You already have a lot on your plate as it is and don’t need the information overload and the drama unfolding in the digital space to add to it.

Practice meditation

To truly enjoy your wedding, you need to be able to stay focused on the present and keep your mind from wandering to worries and stressful thoughts. That’s a lot easier said than done when your daily routine consists of playing out scenarios of everything that could go wrong.

With emotions running high, it can be extremely difficult to fight wedding day anxieties. Fortunately, meditation is a great way to train your mind to focus on the present moment and thus create a sense of inner peace and calm, even when you find yourself in stressful situations. You may not be a fan of meditation, but there’s no harm in giving it a try. You might be surprised by the results.

Make time to focus on yourself (and your partner)

Your wedding is about you and your partner, so that’s what you should be focusing on. Ironically, between all the running around and planning, you might not have much time to spend with your loved one, and that can put a strain on your relationship, which kind of defies the whole purpose of the celebration.

No matter how busy you are, you have to make self-care a priority and schedule some time for yourself and your future spouse. Plan date nights, treat yourself to a spa session, watch a movie, and do things that usually make you happy.

Fit in some quick workouts

One of the most simple and effective (although not the most pleasant) ways to fight off stress and anxiety is to exercise. The good news is you don’t have to go to the gym to work out. A 20-minute fitness session in your living room a couple of days a week should be enough to make a difference. You can also go outdoors to train and combine the power of a quick workout with that of nature.

Don’t let little things ruin your day

You may be a perfectionist and want everything to happen the way you envisioned, but you also have to maintain realistic expectations and realize that some things might not go according to plan. Setting the bar too high is a recipe for disaster in every situation and all the more so on occasions when everyone is feeling emotional.

Don’t let the quest for perfection or the little mishaps that are inevitable take away from the beauty of the moment. Also, have a plan B and maybe a plan C just in case disaster strikes and things go downhill. Hoping for the best while preparing for the worst will provide you with some much-needed peace of mind.

Don’t neglect your diet and sleep

When we say you shouldn’t neglect your diet, we don’t mean starving yourself to fit into your wedding gown. We mean eating a healthy and balanced diet so you can have plenty of energy to tackle all the wedding-planning tasks and be in top shape on your big day. Getting enough hours of restful sleep regularly also plays an essential role in the equation, so try to create a good bedtime routine that will help you get the rest you need each night.

In the end, the best way to chase stress away is to remember the true meaning of the event. With that in mind, you should be able to find joy in every moment and appreciate the whole journey.
