Dice, Lots, and Signs from Above: How the Greeks Tried to Predict the Future

For the ancient Greeks, the future was unknown, but not necessarily impossible to discover. They believed that clues about upcoming events could be found in signs, random outcomes, or messages from the gods. Before an important journey, a war, or a difficult decision, people might consult an oracle, observe an unusual event, draw lots, or use one of several methods of divination.

Today, random outcomes are usually explained by probability and coincidence. In the ancient Greek world, they could have a very different meaning. Something a person could neither predict nor control was sometimes seen as a sign from forces that knew more than ordinary mortals.

Why Did the Greeks Trust the Drawing of Lots?

When there was no obvious choice between several options, drawing lots offered a simple and final answer. It could be used to assign duties, decide an order, or choose between different possibilities.

A random result was not always seen as a meaningless coincidence. Since people could not control the outcome of the draw, they could connect it with fate or the will of higher powers. This allowed them to leave part of a difficult decision to forces beyond human control.

This attitude matched the wider Greek view of fate. People could act and make their own choices, but there were limits to what they could control. Even the strongest heroes in Greek myths were not always able to escape the path chosen for them.

What Did a Roll of the Dice Mean?

Dice were a well-known form of entertainment in the ancient world, but the unpredictable nature of a roll could also give them a deeper meaning. If the result could not be known in advance, it was easy to see it as more than a simple chance. It could be interpreted as an answer or a hint about what might happen next.

At the same time, dice were not always connected with predictions or religious practices. People also used them simply for entertainment. The same fascination with unpredictable outcomes continues today, from traditional dice games to the best poker rooms in the world, where players face a combination of chance, strategy, and uncertain results. The difference is that modern games can be understood through mathematical probability rather than interpreted as decisions made by the gods.

For people in the ancient world, these categories were not always so clearly separated. Games, random coincidences, and possible signs could easily overlap.

How Did the Greeks Receive Messages from the Gods?

For decisions that could affect the future of a person or even an entire city, simply drawing lots was not enough. In these situations, the Greeks visited sacred sites and consulted oracles. The most famous was the Oracle of Delphi, which the Greeks believed communicated the will of Apollo.

People asked about war, politics, dangerous journeys, the founding of new settlements, and their personal fate. However, receiving an answer was only part of the process. The words of an oracle could often have more than one meaning, so they had to be interpreted correctly. A wrong interpretation could lead to serious consequences.

Oracles were not the only source of messages from the gods. Unusual animal behavior, rare natural events, or strange incidents before an important event could also take on special meaning. For the Greeks, the world around them was one of the ways divine forces could send signs to mortals.

Why Did People Want to Know What Would Happen Next?

The desire to predict the future was largely connected to the fear of uncertainty. People in the ancient world could not know how a battle would end, whether a sea journey would be safe, or how successful the next harvest would be. Looking to the gods or fate for answers helped make the unknown feel at least a little more understandable.

Drawing lots, rolling dice, prophecies, and consulting oracles offered different ways to answer the same question: what will happen next? Today, we can explain chance much better through mathematics and probability, but the human desire to know the future has not disappeared.
